Fall Term 2025: Week 5
October is recognized as Indigenous Peoples’ Month in the United States—a time to honor the rich histories, diverse cultures, and enduring resilience of Native American, Alaska Native, and other Indigenous communities. As Dartmouth launches a month of events celebrating Native identities and fostering important conversations around sovereignty and belonging, we also take this opportunity to highlight the significant contributions of Indigenous women in STEM throughout history. Among them:
Dr. Susan La Flesche Picotte (1865-1915), Omaha Nation, a physician who opened the first hospital on Native American land.
Mary Golda Ross (1908-2008), Cherokee Nation, engineer, mathematician, and an essential figure in the 1960s Apollo space missions.
Nicole Aunapu Mann, Wailacki Branch of the Round Valley Indian Tribes, a mechanical engineer who became the first Native American woman in space in 2022.
Elizabeth James-Perry, Aquinnah Wampanoag Tribe, a marine biologist, restoration ecologist, and the federal Tribal co-lead of the Northeast Regional Ocean Planning Body.
Robin Wall Kimmerer, Potawatomi Nation, professor of environmental biology, and the recipient of a MacArthur Genius Grant.
These women are pioneers in their fields and helped lay the foundation for the scientists who came after them.

Swinging by the Student Wellness Center to say hi to Rosie and Poppy, therapy dogs who take their jobs VERY seriously (you might see them in Baker Lobby too)
Dropping in on a yoga class—Dartmouth offers sunrise yoga for early risers as well as yoga nidra combined with journaling
Celebrating Finished the Week Friday with the Tucker Center (there’s cake!)
And, of course, make sure to get enough sleep—your brain will thank you!
