Spring Term - Week 9

We're almost at the end of the academic year—congratulations on all your hard work and dedication! Summer break is just around the corner.

A quick reminder: the Karen E. Wetterhahn Science Symposium takes place tomorrow. If you're participating in the Reed Competition or the student poster session, you should have already received detailed instructions. Please review them carefully to ensure you know your scheduled time and location at the Hanover Inn.

We’re honored to welcome Dr. Odette Harris ’91 as our keynote speaker. Her address will begin at 4 PM in the Grand Ballroom and is open to the public. We strongly encourage you to attend this highlight of the symposium.

WISP Interns

As we near the end of the spring term, please remember to track your hours. The period leading up to the Wetterhahn Symposium can be quite busy, so make sure to check in with your faculty mentors to clarify which tasks need to be completed before your internship ends on June 6.

WISP Peer Mentor Program

Mentors,

As we enter the final two weeks of the term, please take a moment to check in with your mentees. This is a great time to connect—consider inviting them for a coffee, taking a walk through Pine Park, or sharing a snack during a study break. Here are a few conversation starters you might find helpful:

  • What have they taken away from their first year at college?

  • Do they see a future for themselves in the sciences at Dartmouth?

  • Have their academic goals shifted since the fall?

  • What does an inclusive STEM community look like to them? What changes would they like to see?

Building strong relationships is essential—not just in academia, but throughout your career. Knowing others in your field or related disciplines means having someone to turn to for advice, feedback, or even just to answer quick questions. Research shows that a supportive community plays a key role in helping young scholars thrive in the sciences.

The WISP team sincerely hopes you've formed meaningful connections and enjoyed your experience with the Peer Mentor Program this year. We’d love for you to consider returning as mentors in the future!
