Spring Term - Week 4
Good morning, WISP! As a reminder, tomorrow night our friends in GWISE will host the final journal club session for the year — see the details below! It’s a great way to learn how to effectively read an academic paper, an invaluable skill if you intend to pursue research.
Speaking of research papers — this week the Nature news team published an analysis of the top 10 most-cited science papers of the past 25 years. Citations allow authors to acknowledge prior literature used in their work and are one means of measuring a paper’s influence. That said, the Nature team found that the most highly-cited papers were not, in general, acknowledged because they involved famous scientific discoveries or ground-breaking theory. Instead, they tended to describe foundational methods, programming, and software used in subsequent work. The take away: that methods section matters!
